Advertising in the modern world dominated by social media and Gen Z’ers can only mean one thing… DIGITAL MARKETING! I mean, why would you buy a newspaper when you can just type a few words into google and get 1000’s of news articles from 100’s of different news outlets. Let’s face it, the world is digital – and it’s time your business adapts to this new age.
So, your business is already being advertised on the usual Facebook and Instagram, you have a few extra hours on your hands each week, and you are ready to take your advertising a step further… Your mind might wander towards YouTube, the platform that allows a whopping 92% of internet users to watch video content each week. Or your mind might wander towards starting a podcast – Spotify does have 32.5 million podcast listeners each month after all. Now the question is, which one suits your business best? Which one will ensure maximum business growth?
The differences are obvious, the one is audio and the one is visual. However, when considering which platform will be best for your business, there is a few things to consider.
These things are:
Now that you know what is expected of you before you start producing this kind of content, let us get into the nitty gritty details!
If you’re not someone who enjoys getting their picture taken or being the centre of attention, YouTube might be a difficult platform to start off on. Becoming a successful Youtuber requires a certain amount of confidence and enthusiasm to grab the attention of your viewer (and keep it throughout the whole video). The big plus with YouTube is that you don’t necessarily need an expensive camera to produce high quality audio/visual content – an iPhone 6 will do the trick! If you are planning on producing videos without you actually being in the video (a great example is The Infographics Show ) make sure your editing skills are up to scratch, because this method makes it even more difficult to hold the attention of your viewers. In saying this, YouTube is definitely worth the time and effort if done consistently!
Podcasts certainly require more equipment to produce. Unfortunately, your iPhone 6 microphone will not do the trick when trying to record a high-quality audio file. Certain earphones/headphones do have built in microphones that could definitely work, but these can also get a little pricey. Just like YouTube (and any other social media platform really), growing an audience requires consistency! However, some pros are that they’re a lot less competitive, you can put your podcast on a lot of different streaming services to reach various people, and only audio editing is required unlike YouTube that requires both audio and visual.
The bottom line is, both platforms could work. Audio and visual content is a great way to capitalize on SEO and reach a bigger audience. It all boils down to one single thing… can you guess what it is?
Yup, that’s it – what will be better for YOU & YOUR business!
If you do not have too much time, too much money to spend, and want the (dare I say it) ‘slightly’ easier option, then starting a podcast is certainly the way to go! However, if you have more time and do not mind being in front of a camera, then YouTube is for you. Both platforms have the potential to grow your business tremendously, it all just depends on your unique situation and the ‘why’.
Oh, and do not forget the most important thing – make sure you enjoy the process. Being consistent becomes 100% more difficult when it feels forced.
In saying this, if you are reading this blog then odds are you have been thinking of starting a podcast or YouTube channel. Let me be the first to say – GO FOR IT! You have absolutely nothing to lose!
Have a great June 😊
