Why Updating your Skills is so Important!
So, you’re a graphic Designer…or Web designer. Excellent! What’s that, since 1963? Wow! What a legend… come again…You refused to learn photoshop and now struggle to find a job? OK, so my example is a little contrived, but that is exactly the point. Yes, you have experience since way back when, but times change. Technology changes, how we do things or approach things change. All these things influence your career and future endeavours. My gut feel is that it is better to know more than less. I did some research, and here’s what I found to be true:
Things are changing at a rapid pace. In Fact, I often see articles stating how many new jobs are still going to be created or haven’t been created yet in our lifetime, and it’s not an easy feat to keep up. Whether you are employed or looking, adding a new skill will not only make you more knowledgeable but also ensure you stay relevant and not fall behind your peers who actually did decide to keep their skillset updated.
More Skills…MORE MONEY
Learning a new skill does not only advance your career, but will automatically ensure your income gets increased with it. Who knows, your new skill set can even propel you into a better Job position. And if you work for yourself, well you know the more you can offer, the less work for your competition! Ha!
More Doors Open
I suppose this point is very close to the previous one, but it’s true. What if your market is suddenly saturated and work is few and far in between? New skills, and new offerings – That’s how you overcome new challenges.
Give the Competition, Competition!
Qualifications, Experience and skills. This is what distinguishes one job interview from the next and – Dare I say it – One company from another. If I can get it all from one place, then that’s where I’ll stay. I’ll give you an example: “Let me design your logo, website, and run your social media marketing. What’s that? You need a video as well? Sure, we can help.” See how easy that sounds? Sometimes it stops after logo. I kid you not. More skills simply mean more possibility and more opportunity.
By updating yourself with the newest and up-to-date best practices you can adapt to any work scenario and drive mission-critical projects to a successful conclusion anywhere in the world. Think about it…suddenly the world doesn’t feel so big now does it?
In the Know of new developments
If there’s a new software release or new trend, having that knowledge under your belt will make you better equipped to compete in your field. Trust me, I am a designer. I know what I am talking about.
It’s not over, never. Whether your 40 or 50. You have a brain, and a drive to move forward. So, move forward. We often underestimate our own potential based on a lacked skill. The thing about skills is that they can be learnt! Speaking of skills – If time is against you, you have the opportunity to outsource. That’s where we thrive!
